Adaptive Yoga
with Michael Bridge-Dickson

Adaptive Yoga is an alignment-based yoga, unifying body, mind, and spirit. It is a modern evolution of the traditional practice, which was always intended to suit the needs of the individual. The system works first with the physical body and its alignment, building an even balance between strength, stability, flexibility, and symmetry between the front and back of the body, left and right, upper and lower halves, linking as much of the body within consciousness as possible.

Traditional and esoteric aspects of yoga are introduced throughout the ongoing development of the physical practice to honor the yogic tradition. Though much of this process is achieved through yogic postures, many other traditional yogic tools are used whenever they may be to the student's maximum benefit. In Adaptive Yoga, the classical poses are adapted for individuals of all needs and abilities physiological, organic, mental, and energetic effects.

[ahimsa yoga]
Choose joy!

[ahimsa yoga] is a haven for intentional living, conscious communities, and traditional Hatha yoga in the heart of the Mile End . Located in a gorgeous, sunlit studio with plants embracing the perimeter of the space, [ahimsa yoga] offers a style of teaching that encourages the joy in every movement and the light in every heart, while fostering a place of absolute comfort, support, and deep ecological awareness.

Using Sanskrit mantra chanting, dynamic classes, and meaningful physical adjustments, each student is motivated to seek a deeper cognizance in the physical asana practice, as well as life beyond the mat. By creating a hybrid home and studio area, students of [ahimsa yoga] are urged to investigate the nearly plastic and packaging free space, catalyzing curiosity and consciousness about all of life's choices - using yoga as the conduit.
Your first class at [ahimsa yoga] is FREE and natural rubber mats are offered free of charge.

The [ahimsa yoga] studio also hosts community events (art openings, book clubs, community dinners, etc.) and workshops, with the intention of knowledge sharing and awareness expansion. Ideas welcome!

Annick Robinson
Budokon Sensei, Yoga teacher, and workshop presenter

Annick Robinson, variation on head stand Annick Robinson, Budokon Sensei, Yoga teacher

Annick Robinson is now teaching Budokon in Montreal, and is available to give workshops, master classes and private training all over Canada.

About Budokon
The word Bu-do-kon translates directly in Japanese as (Bu) Warrior (Do) Way (Kon) Spirit, or Way of the Spiritual Warrior.

The Budokon physical practice draws upon ancient and modern yogic and martial arts styles. The foundation of the Budokon physical practice is precision, alignment and Zen mind. All Budokon techniques are designed to explore the body's full range of motion. The practice dances between agility, control, speed, power, balance, flow, focus, calm, precision, flow and mastery in the body, mind and spirit. The Budokon Zen practice is seated meditation. Zen is about single minded living. Zen is about freedom from our own ideas. This practice is the foundation of Budokon and weaves its way through everything we do.

Budokon is a living art. By that I mean it is the art of living. It is your waking and your sleeping, your walking and your sitting, your living and your dying. I cannot say that it is more special than any other art. In fact, it is not special at all. It is the practitioner who brings all that the art is, all that the art will ever be. Budokon is not about gaining ideas. There is nothing to gain from it. It is simply a way. Our way is the Zen way. We are not a religion or a devotional practice. We do not practice to become enlightened. We practice because we ar e enlightened. If you are seeking something in order to gain something, this is the wrong practice. Budokon is empty of gaining ideas. If you believe there is something to gain from it, you will always be disappointed by it. This is the first lesson in our art. We must come to it, like all things, with a pure mind, free from attachment and gaining ideas. This is why we suffer Budokon is freedom from suffering, nothing more.

Art of Living
ART OF LIVING FOUNDATION

The Art of Living Foundation is an international volunteer-based NGO active in over 140 countries. The mission of this non-profit organization is to promote peace through service projects and personal development programs that allow individuals to enhance the quality of their lives.

THE SUDARSHAN KRIYA
An ancient breathing technique for today’s stressful life.

One of the central elements of Art of Living workshops is an initiation into the practice of Sudarshan Kriya. This powerful breathing technique helps eliminate stress, rejuvenates the body’s organs and systems, transforms negative emotions, and restores inner peace.

According to the age-old science of yoga, toxins that we accumulate in the cells weaken the body and lead to disease. Sudarshan Kriya oxygenates the cells and flushes out toxins. Physically, the cells are revitalized; emotionally, balance and well-being settle in.

BENEFITS
Many independent studies on the benefits of the Sudarshan Kriya taught in the Art of Living workshops support what participants regularly report:

  • Reduced stress, anxiety and tension
  • Renewed enthusiasm, vitality, inner peace and self-esteem
  • Strengthened immune system
  • Heightened self-esteem and confidence
  • Enrichment of interpersonal relationships
  • Increased mental clarity and concentration
  • Expansion of consciousness and sense of observation
  • Anti-aging effect.

H.H. SRI SRI RAVI SHANKAR

The Founder, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is a peace builder recognized for his work towards the reduction of violence, poverty and social conflicts. He is behind numerous charitable projects and is an inspiration to millions of people worldwide.

TESTIMONIALS

My energy level has gone up and I now require fewer hours of sleep. I am also more flexible and agile in sports. Emotionally, I am more forgiving of myself and others, and can handle criticism and situations better by being less easily affected. Friends and family have also noticed that I've matured.
Dr. Chou Mei Ling (Consultant Therapist)

As an engineer I need to be both analytical and critical. Mental clarity and stamina are also essential. Sudarshan Kriya and meditation enhance these abilities. On top of it all, I have a better sense of well-being.

Association Yoga/Meditation Sant Mat

Sant Mat is an inner Yoga/Meditation free of charge. It focuses on the soul which must rise above the body into the Realm of Spirit to awaken into the highest consciousness, Self-Realization. A competent living Master-Saint can establish this inner connection in the aspirant, granting a first-hand contact with the inner Light and Sound. This is a free gift. Once this connection with the Sound Current is established one can practice daily toward Self-Realization, inner peace, love, less stress and better health. Free weekly yoga/meditation groups are offered.

O u r   a p p r o a c h: The JOY of MOVEMENT

Explore your body's natural rhythms with the Nia Technique, an expressive movement practice for body, mind and spirit. This unique fusion of dance blends concepts from the East and West to deliver a richly diverse energy experience; it is infused with the spirit of:

HEALING arts [YOGA, Moshe Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique]
DANCE arts [Modern, Jazz, Duncan]
MARTIAL arts [T'ai-Chi, Tae-Kwon-Do, Aikido]

This combination creates a synergy that no isolated technique can match.

Nia is done barefoot to inspirational music and is a rewarding compliment to asana practice. It is a worldwide fitness and lifestyle program with 25 years of technical advancement.

In Nia, you become aware that every movement in life is a part of your dance and that each and every movement can be used to self-heal. Nia is movement as medicine.

At Studio Via Nia we offer the Nia experience: Classes makes use of music, imagery and literature as a source for aiding students to connect with their bodies, step into their true self, and learn how to move their whole body more powerfully and elegantly. As a student you are encouraged to further develop the basic elements of space, time, breath, energy, and form while increasing suppleness and strength of body, mind, spirit and heart.

When you experience the primary lesson of Nia - that life should be lived through sensation - you become connected.

Brian Tuck

Certified Hatha Yoga instructor
bilingual, for all levels of experience.

Offering Private or semi-private sessions from the comfort of your own home or my studio.

Balance in our physiology, our minds, our choices… find balance with your yoga practice whether on one foot, in a twist, on your head, or off the mat!

Certified 584 hrs with the Canadian Yoga Alliance and have acquired over 1,500 hours of teaching experience in the Hatha tradition, Hatha flow, Partner, Yin, Chair and Restorative Yoga

Brian Tuck

Why private yoga?:

• You are guided how to coordinate the breath while listening to your body, abandoning yourself in your practice.
• Instruction on meditation and breathing techniques.
• Yoga made accessible to all body types and levels of fitness. Your alignment is adapted according to your body’s constitution, involving steps and adjustments for every posture to build your foundation.
• Informing you of the physical benefits of the postures and the subtle energies in the body.
• Instruction how to unblock the body and mind from the past that affects our present behavior, choices and attitude. When we address resistance in the deep tissues of the body, or the fear entering postures we find difficult, this translates “off the mat” in our relationships, friendships and day-to-day lives.
• Adopting a sense of “play”, weight transferring, yielding, letting go, overcoming fears and celebrating how your body moves. Reclaim your personal potential inside and out.

Interested in simply improving your overall health, flexibility and strength? Whatever gets you on a yoga mat is enough reason to begin yoga or restart your practice! The tradition promises to bring more in due time.

Whether on of off the mat! Carry your practice with you throughout the day.

Christine Harkness, Kripalu Style yoga, Montreal

Le seul veritable voyage, le seul bain de Jouvence, ce ne serait pas d'aller vers de nouveaux paysages, mais d'avoir d'autres yeux.
- Marcel Proust

Christine Harkness

New to Yoga? Here is a nice way to start: Affordable small-group or private sessions at your home, at your place of work, or at a private Plateau loft/studio.

I teach Hatha Yoga (Kripalu-style) to real beginners (people with very little or no yoga experience). I suggest an 8-week program to gently and safely prepare you for drop-in studio classes or a beginner-level home practice.

I am a Montreal-based Yoga teacher registered with the Yoga Alliance.
I was introduced to yoga by my mother who had discovered this ancient practice while living in Madhya Pradesh, India. I have been leading yoga classes since 2002, and I completed my 200-hr teacher training certification in 2003. Currently, I am seeking my professional-level (500hr) certification at Kripalu Centre for Yoga and Health in the Berkshires, Massachussetts.

There is no reason to rush: Start with the fundamentals, and build from a solid foundation. I hope to guide you towards your own unique, evolving, life-long yoga practice.

Eliza Moore.

Rooftop Yoga at Spa Orange.
Instructor Eliza Moore was trained in Montreal by both Mark Darby and Hart Lazer in the Ashtanga and Iyengar methods of Yoga. Her teaching pulls from both traditions, pairing a flowing sequence with a focus on physical alignment. Also a musician, Eliza finds joy and inspiration in rhythm and melody. She uses a diverse soundtrack to awaken a dance-like quality in her classes. This musical tapestry gives the students a frame work from which to link the flow of breath and movement as well as a playful approach to discovering the Asanas.
Eliza's teaching is also informed by her training in Eastern medicine as a Shiatsu practitioner. She incorporates her knowledge of the subtle energetic layers or meridian system of the body, introducing her students to a more whole sense of self-awareness, beyond the material realm.
All Yoga Classes include use of Spa Facilities.

iyengar yoga
IYENGAR YOGA
ROSEMONT AND MILE-END

Yoga is a system of exercise that uses physical postures and breathing techniques to work the entire body and mind, strengthen muscles, lubricate joints and rejuvenate the brain and other internal organs.

This applied science of the mind and body seeks a state of perfect mental and physical health. It is a system of personal development based on honesty, non-violence and personal study.

An Indian philosophy that has been practiced for thousands of years, Yoga is highly pertinent to modern life. Its practice develops a strong, flexible and healthy body, a relaxed and alert mind and a contented outlook on life.

Certified Iyengar Yoga teachers go through a rigorous three-to-five year teacher training program based on an international syllabus and standards set by Yogacharya Shri B.K.S. Iyengar, to:
1. Develop maturity in the personal practice of asana and pranayama;
2. Develop a thorough understanding of the asanas and pranayamas for teaching purposes;
3. Gain proficiency in teaching skills;
4. Gain a basic education in anatomy;
5. Develop a working understanding of the philosophical basis of Astanga Yoga in the Iyengar Method;
6. Learn the various precautions that need to be followed for students with common problems;
7. Practice their teaching skills under the guidance of a qualified training teacher.

To enter a teacher training program, students must be competent Iyengar yoga students who maintain a daily yoga practice. We encourage any yoga student to check the conditions of certification of their yoga teacher!!!

To learn more about Iyengar yoga:

KIDS ARE ZEN WITH JENN

Hi! I’m Jenn Mallin and I consider myself truly lucky to be teaching yoga for more than eight years to students of all ages. During the past seven years, my passion for children has granted me the privilege to be a full time kids yoga instructor in several public and private schools across Montreal.

I offer storytelling yoga classes in a calm and educational environment. The yoga program consists of interactive stories with virtuous themes incorporating yoga postures, breathing techniques, meditation/concentration games as well as guided relaxations. The classes end with Circle Time, where the children are invited to share life examples related to the topic of the story and which encourage self-expression.

Children learn how to relax and enjoy life through yoga, all in good fun!

I’m certified in various yoga traditions in addition to Kids Yoga trainings with Yoga ED, Radiant Child Yoga, Yogakids, The Yoga Tree with Maalaa, Yoga 4 Kids and Yoga for the Special Child (focusing on children with special needs).

Marie-Daphné Roy

Marie-Daphné Roy

I began practicing yoga in 1996, and started teaching in 1999 at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Western Massachusetts. In 2000, upon completion of a two year residency program and a 500 hour Kripalu Yoga Teacher Training, I've pursued my training with teachers from different horizons and schools of thoughts, both in Montreal and abroad. Currently, I teach group and private classes for beginners, intermediate, advanced and pregnant students. I believe yoga is a great means to reconnect to ourselves, our bodies, our emotions and our thoughts. During the poses we focus on alignment principles, as well as developing a sense of self-awareness, self-observation and compassion.

In massage therapy I practice the Reiki Usui method and Thai Yoga massage, as well as Swedish massage and Myofascial Therapy. I find massage therapy to be a complementary tool in any quest for physical, emotional and psychological well being; it helps in reducing stress levels (yours as well as mine!), and works equally for sedentary and active people.

1) Nritya Yoga Postures: sacred Yogic dance postures and Mudras (symbolic hand gestures), flow from one posture to another smoothly like dance.

2) Vibrant, joyful Trance Dance

3) Meditation in Motion using Mudras(sacred hand gestures) & sacred mantra chanting.

4) Yogic breathwork, visualizations and movement to connect to the essence of all the Nritya Yoga Postures. Music and ancient movement techniques are an integral part of this practice. we explore the ancient philosophies of our creative/sensual energies through this compassionate, graceful, joyful voyage of the ecstatic soul!

An experience that truly incorporates the body, mind & spirit; spiritually inspiring and soulfully uplifting!

Nritya Yoga is designed for both women and men and can aid to improving one's health emotionally, physically and spiritually. Sensei Monica Ordaz

Budokon Regional Director
& Certified Teacher

Sensei Monica Ordaz

Budokon translates directly in Japanese as (BU) Warrior, (DO) way, (KON) spirit.

“Way of the Spiritual Warrior”

Budokon is the first and only arte to integrate yoga, martial arts and living arts into one complete system. It is a true evolution of movement that must be experience to be understood. Budokon was created in 2000 by Cameron Shayne.

The Budokon physical practice draws upon ancient and modern yogic and martial arts styles. The foundation of the Budokon physical practice is precision, alignment and Zen mind. The practice dances between agility, control, speed, power, balance and flow. The physical practice is divided into two themes: The Yogic Series, and the Budo Series. Both themes constantly draw from and depend on each other.

The Budokon Yogic Series was heavily influenced by Iyengar and Ashtanga yogic techniques and alignment. The focus is on control, calm , power and precision.

The Budokon Budo Series is a combination of standing and ground techniques drawn primarily from Karate-Do, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Capoeira, Tai-Chi and Olympic Style Tae Kwon Do. The objective of this series is to teach agility, power, focus and flow in the body and mind.

The Budokon Zen practice is seated meditation. Zen is about single minded living. Zen is about freedom from our own ideas. This practice is the foundation of Budokon and weaves its way through everything we do.

The way we do anything is the way we do everything” - Kancho Cameron Shayne

Swami Paramananda

swami paramananda

Swami Paramananda was born on 8th October 1959 at Souillac, in the Paradise Island of Mauritius. At a very tender age He started his spiritual search which was accelerated by a vision of Lord Jesus. In 1979, He met his preceptor, Swami Veervasantha, who triggered in Him the process of self-transformation. He chiselled his path of inner research through an iron determination and adamant will. And at the age of 21, He attained enlightenment - the peak of consciousness or Cosmic Consciousness!

After attaining enlightenment, the zeal to share and awaken humanity overflowed. Hence He started his life mission to help humanity at large by guiding them towards inner transformation, the only way to establish love, peace, unity and brotherhood in the world. He advocates a global mind transformation.

In 1992, He founded the Satyam Gyanam Anandam Society (SGAS), meaning truth, knowledge and bliss. It is a registered NGO and a recognized charitable organisation. It is essentially a facilitator and serves as a meeting point between the seeker and the master. It provides the required infrastructure, logistics and facilities that helps Him to offer guidance to seekers of all walks of life, irrespective of religious beliefs, creeds and social status. The SGAS organises courses on meditation, public discourses and conferences, including international ones, where Swamiji offers His wisdom and guidance. Conception and production of audio and video materials, publication of brochures and pamphlets and fund-raising activities also form part of the various activities of the organisation.

Besides giving regular meditation courses in Mauritius, Canada and in the United Kingdom, Swami Paramananda is also much solicited by various institutions to deliver sensitisation talks on various topics related to the well-being of people and the society. Swami Paramananda also participates in international conferences and regularly submits papers to UN organisations such as UNESCO. He also conducts mass meditation such as the Rebirth therapy and residential and non-residential spiritual retreats

Deeply aware of the need to introduce a holistic approach in the important field of education, He has already started a Self-Education programme in some schools to empower students and teachers alike. All the writings, courses and discourses of Swami Paramananda aim at triggering a ‘global mind transformation’ so that mankind can live in a blissful state. He considers that all the social and global problems facing mankind can be best tackled with an expanded consciousness of one and all, thus his endeavour to make each individual discover his own Self first.

Swami Paramananda is a prolific Mauritian writer who has authored 21 books during the past 12 years. He also publishes the bi-annual ‘Know Thyself’ magazine and has written more than 600 inspiring articles in local papers. His books range from healthy evolving human life and relationships to the unveiling of esoteric knowledge, and addressing profound topics dealing with existence and creation, the sex energy and expansion of consciousness. The popularity of these has resulted into reprints of some of his books more than once.

Two of his very successful books ‘Man, God and the Universe’ and ‘Sex, Breaking the Taboo’ have been translated into French and published in France by Editions ALTESS for the French-speaking.

The specificity of Swami Paramananda lies in His direct style, the ability to interpret complex spiritual truths in a simple and logical manner, using a scientific approach in all his explanations and writings.

Swami Paramananda, in this unique approach to spirituality, brings back to life the ancient scriptures and also expertly links scientific discoveries with the truths proclaimed by seers of yore. He has adapted ancient meditation techniques for the contemporary man bearing in mind his present body/mind state. He is truly a multidimensional master in his matchless ability to guide the seeker on any path the latter is inclined to follow.

He represents a ray of hope for humanity, which has already lost focus about its true purpose on earth and sinking into a whirlpool of ignorance and unconsciousness.

Veena Yoga

I don't believe in rigidity. I love fluidity.
My Yoga is organic, not an organisation: an inspiration, not an institution.

veena yoga

We must never stop telling ourselves:
our reality is only the shadow of our possibilities.

Yoga is simply the participation in the wonder of Life as it is already perfectly Given, and certainly not the imposition of the will on the body and breath.

Moving with the breath is an extraordinary medicine. We use the Asanas, the bodily forms to take part in the process of the breath and especially to receive the Inhalation, the Feminine Force, with all the systems of our anatomy from the crown to the base. The Exhalation strengthens all these systems. These are useful tools.

I teach the basic principles of Yoga and the Breath inspired by the tradition of Krishnamacharya; the alignment of the body inspired by Donna Farrhi, the Body-Mind Centering of Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen; and the inner flowinspired by Angela Farmer. My philosophy is inspired by Mark Withwell, Alan Clements, U.G. and J. Krishnamurti, Andrew Harvey, Christiane Singer and Life itself. The mysterious constellation of the whole Universe within and outside of me, is my ultimate teacher. Danielle Ouellette, studio director.

Veena can also be rented for your workshops, etc.

Yoga For Pregnancy/Yoga Prenatal

Pregnancy is an important time in a woman`s life, a period full of physical, mantal, emotional and spiritual changes. Giving birth is probably the time of biggest transformation in our life, the time when a couple becomes a family, a woman becomes a mother and a man becomes a father! For most of us this period requires a lot of adjustments. Practising yoga regularly will help you to go through your pregnancy with grace, peace and confidence. Through the practices of postures (asanas), relaxation, meditation and breathing techniques (pranayamas) you will achieve a more balanced mind and react less to the changes that come with pregnancy.

Yoga will help and diminish the pregnancy related problems like constipation, lower back pain, edema, weight gain, swelling, insomnia etc. Through balancing your mind and body and through your own growth and evolution in this wonderful period of your life, you will be able to create a more harmonious relationship with your baby, your partner and your environment.

YOGAKIDS

Angie Continisio is a YogaKid Associate who is presently training to become a CYKT (Certified YokaKids Trainer).

Children absorb and process information differently through movement, seeing, listening, touching, singing and reading. YogaKids can become a springboard for creativity and exploration. The YogaKids method educates the whole child with an integrative approach that addresses their brain, intellect, body and spirit in a seamless fashion.

I have created a repertoire of fun, educational and interesting classes with the various books and props I possess.

I believe that incorporating YogaKids with healthy eating habits will have a positive long term effect on children. As a certified Nutrition and Wellness Specialist with Canfit Pro and a YogaKids Associate, my goal is to combine these two elements to instill in children the importance of their physical and mental being.

ZEN WITH JENN

Hi! I’m Jenn Mallin and I have had the honor to share the art of yoga with students of all ages for more than eight years.

Although the classes are based on Hatha Yoga, they are infused with my Native American Indian roots and studies of Acupressure & Chinese Medicine. As a result, the yoga I offer is influenced by the cycles of Nature; whether by the seasons, the elements, the moons or the six directions.

I have trained in multiple yoga styles such as Viniyoga with Lily Champagne, Classical Hatha Yoga with Dr. Madan Bali, Power Yoga with Baron Baptiste and Sivananda Yoga. I am also certified in Japanese & Chinese Acupressure as well as Reflexology.
